Art Gallery of Ballarat

Central Goldfields artist Marylou Verberne sources and utilises photographic images from local archives and her own family history to delve into the Victorian goldrush. From the earliest colonial surveys onward, the camera was put to work fashioning the land into an object to be mapped, classified and possessed. Through processes of layering, stitching, veiling and suspension, Verberne transforms photographs into surfaces that hold multiple temporalities at once. For the artist, what remains are not just photographs but also the altered landscapes that still retain the scars long after the lives that shaped them have gone.
